An investment that pays off
A facade flag is a marketing investment — so it makes sense to want to know how long you'll get use from it. The good news: with proper use and maintenance, a high-quality facade flag easily lasts 1 to 3 years, depending on weather conditions and frequency of use.
What determines the lifespan?
The lifespan of a facade flag depends on several factors:
- Material: our flags are made from 115 g/m² woven polyester, a robust material specifically developed for outdoor use. It withstands rain, wind and UV radiation.
- Usage: a flag hanging outside 365 days a year in a windy environment wears faster than one used only at events. Indoor use significantly extends the lifespan.
- Maintenance: a flag that is regularly cleaned and brought indoors during extreme weather lasts noticeably longer.
- Print quality: sublimation-printed textiles retain their colour intensity far longer than digitally printed surfaces — the colours are baked into the fibres, not applied on top.
Average lifespan by application
- Permanently outdoors (wind and rain): 6–12 months with daily use
- Seasonal outdoor use (spring–autumn): 2–3 seasons or more
- Events and trade shows: 3–5 years with careful handling
- Indoors or covered locations: 5+ years
Maintenance tips to extend the lifespan
- Bring the flag indoors in storms. Wind speeds above 60 km/h can stress the fabric and pole. In extreme weather we recommend removing the flag.
- Clean regularly. Dirt, bird droppings and algae growth damage the fabric. Use lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a soft brush. Air dry the flag.
- Store dry. Never store the flag while damp — this promotes mould growth. Roll it loosely or fold it with the printed side facing inward.
- Check the pole and wall bracket. The hardware wears faster than the fabric. Check the connections and wall bracket regularly for rust or cracks.
- Rotate the flag periodically. Does your flag always face the same direction in the sun? Rotate it 180° to promote even UV fading.
When does a flag need replacing?
Watch for the following signs:
- Frayed or torn edges along the side seams
- Noticeably faded colours or white showing through the material (with single-sided)
- Holes or wear spots from constant rubbing against the pole
Our flags are supplied with reinforced side seams and a grommet, which significantly delays tearing along the edges.
Spare parts and reuse
The pole and wall bracket are available separately. If the printed fabric needs replacing over time, you don't need to reorder the full set — just the printed flag panel. This also makes our facade flags more sustainable: less material waste, lower replacement costs.
Conclusion
A facade flag is not a disposable product. With the right material, the right printing technique and a little maintenance, you'll enjoy your marketing investment for years. Not sure which size or configuration suits your situation? Browse our range or get in touch — we're happy to advise.
