In short: supply your logo as a vector file (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) in CMYK, keep the design simple enough to read from 20 metres away and let the logo take up 40 to 60% of the flag's width. Only have a JPG or PNG? Upload it to the design tool on the product page: you choose your size first and see straight away whether the resolution is good enough for it. A flag with your logo costs from €30.00 single-sided and from €46.00 double-sided.
Your logo on a flag: make an impression
A flag with your logo is one of the most powerful ways to make your brand visible — outdoors, on the street, at events or on the front of your business premises. But a logo that looks good on paper behaves very differently on a flag flying in the wind. These five tips will help you get the most out of your logo flag.
Tip 1 — Use a vector file (not a JPG or PNG)
This is by far the most important tip. A logo in vector format (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) can be scaled up to any size without losing quality. A logo saved as a JPG or PNG is a raster image: enlarge it too much and it loses sharpness, leaving you with a blurry or grainy print. That difference really counts on a flag, because even the smallest standard size is 60 × 40 cm and the largest is 450 × 300 cm.
Only have your logo as a JPG or PNG? Ask your designer or whoever looks after your brand identity for the vector file. If that's not possible, place the image in the design tool on the single-sided flag product page: you choose your size there, upload the file and the tool shows you right away whether the resolution is sufficient at that size (guideline: around 40 ppi at actual size). That way you know before you order rather than after.
Tip 2 — Keep it simple: less is more
A flag moves, flutters and is seen from a distance. Fine print, complex details and small lettering get lost as it waves. On your flag, use:
- A maximum of 2 colours (ideally contrasting ones)
- Your logo without a long tagline or caption
- A clear background colour that contrasts with the logo
Ask yourself: is my flag recognisable from 20 metres away, in the wind, from a moving car? If so, you've got it right.
Tip 3 — Choose the right background colour
The background colour of your flag is just as important as the logo itself. A few guidelines:
- A white logo on a dark background or a coloured logo on a white/light background always works well
- Avoid colours that are too close to each other (e.g. a light blue logo on a blue background)
- Please note: dye-sublimation printing on 115 g/m² polyester shows a slight colour shift compared with on-screen colours. Ideally, supply your logo in CMYK for the most predictable result
Tip 4 — Use the right colour profile (CMYK)
Digital screens work with RGB colours (red, green, blue). Print shops work with CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black). If your logo is in RGB and you don't convert it to CMYK, the printed colours may differ from what you see on your screen.
What to do:
- Convert your logo to CMYK before you upload it. If you don't, the conversion still happens during printing — but then you're not the one deciding which colour comes out
- Keep your brand's Pantone or RAL values to hand, so you can stick to the closest match when choosing the background colour
- When in doubt, go for more contrast: a colour shift is far less noticeable when the logo and background are far apart
Tip 5 — Think about proportions: logo versus flag
A common mistake is a logo that's too small on a large flag. On a 150 × 100 cm flag, the logo should ideally take up 40–60% of the flag's width, centred or placed slightly higher (the eye is drawn to the upper part of the flag first). In the design tool you see that proportion right away: you move your logo around on the flag and check whether it looks right.
Look at the shape too. The eight flag sizes, from 60 × 40 cm to 450 × 300 cm, are all landscape (wider than they are tall), so a horizontal or square logo works best on them. Would you rather have a portrait format? Then take a look at the Straight beach flag with your own design: it's narrow and tall (from 40 × 235 cm to 90 × 430 cm), so a vertical or square logo with the name underneath works better.
Supplying your file
When you're ready to have your logo printed on a flag, supply:
- A vector file (AI, EPS, SVG) or a PDF, or a PNG at around 40 ppi at actual size
- CMYK colour profile
- Text converted to outlines (curves)
- 5 mm bleed all round
