Meaning of the Haitian flag

Blue above and red below, with the coat of arms on a white panel in the middle: a palm tree with a liberty cap, cannons and the motto 'L'union fait la force'. According to tradition, Jean-Jacques Dessalines tore the white out of the French tricolour in 1803.
