Which beach flag should you choose? Wave, Drop, Square and Straight compared

Vier beachflags naast elkaar: Straight, Drop, Wave en Square, elk op een kruisvoet

Choose a Square if you have a lot of text, a Drop if there is often little wind, a Wave if you mainly want to stand out among other flags, and a Straight if you need height. You can order all four with your own design from a single piece, complete with pole and a base of your choice, from €85.00.

Wave: the shape that stands out

The Wave has a wavy top edge. In a row of ordinary flags at a trade fair or along a race course, it is the shape that catches the eye. An elastic band along the mast keeps the fabric taut. Design with the wave: put your logo in the wide middle section, not in the tip at the top, where the fabric gets narrower. Wave beach flag from €120.00.

Drop: keeps its shape in light wind

The teardrop shape has plenty of room at the top, right at the eye level of passers-by. Its big advantage: it keeps its shape even when there is little wind, where a tall, narrow flag can start to droop. That makes the Drop a safe choice for a courtyard, a shop entrance or a spot between buildings. Drop beach flag from €105.00.

Square: the most room for text

A rectangular beach flag is the same width from top to bottom: 75 cm. That means more text fits on it than on a curved shape, and it stays readable at the bottom too. Choose the Square for an offer, your opening hours or a name with a logo above it. Keep 8 cm clear on the pole side; that is where the sleeve goes. Square beach flag from €89.00.

Straight: when you need height

The Straight is the classic beach flag with a rounded top. With five sizes, it offers the most choice: narrow or wide, from 220 to 430 cm tall. The tallest size can be seen above a crowd or a row of parked cars. Here too, an elastic band along the mast keeps the fabric taut. Straight beach flag from €85.00.

Which base?

With every shape you choose the base yourself: a cross base for flat ground, a ground spike for grass or sand, or a parasol base that you fill with water. The ground decides which one you need, not the shape. Read more in our guide to beach flag bases.

What to look out for in your design

  • The print shows through for 90 to 95 per cent. The back shows your design mirrored, so text only reads properly on the front.
  • Put your main message in the top section. That hangs at eye level and stays visible when people are standing in front of it.
  • Use large letters and few words. A beach flag is read in passing.
  • In the design tool, a dashed line shows what stays safely inside and what disappears under the band.

How long does a beach flag last?

Outdoors, the fabric lasts three to five months, up to wind force six. Bring it in when the wind is strong: that makes more difference to its lifespan than the shape you choose.
