In short: if you can push something into the ground, take the ground spike. If you can’t and the flag is only up for a short while, the cross base will do; if it stays outside on paving for weeks or months, choose the parasol base and fill it with water on site. You choose the base together with the flag itself: on the Straight, Square, Drop and Wave, all three bases are available as options on the product page.
A beach flag rarely blows over because of the wind itself. It blows over because it’s standing on a base that doesn’t suit the ground. That’s good news, because it’s a choice you can get right in two minutes.
The only question that matters: where will it stand?
The ground decides — not the height of the flag and not the weight of the fabric. If you can push something into it, a ground spike is always the best and cheapest solution. If you can’t, weight has to do the job.
By the way, you simply choose the base with the flag itself, on the product page, in the same step as your size and band colour. It ships in the same box, together with the pole and, for the Straight, Drop and Wave, the carry bag. In that same step you upload your design in the design tool: you can see straight away whether the resolution is high enough for the size you’ve chosen, so you won’t find out only once the flag is already up.
Soft ground: grass, sand or soil
Choose the ground spike. You drive it into the ground, slide the pole in and lock it in place. Done. A one-kilo spike holds a four-metre flag better than a loose fifteen-kilo base, because the force goes down into the ground instead of levering against a plate.
It’s also the most affordable of the three. If your flag stands on a sports pitch, a festival site or the lawn in front of your business, you don’t need to look any further.
Hard ground, indoors or short-term: the cross base
On paving, tarmac or a trade-fair floor, there’s nothing to push a spike into. That’s when you use the cross base: four legs that fold out into an X, with the pole in the middle.
Indoors, that’s more than enough. Outdoors it works fine for a day or an afternoon, as long as you’re nearby. If it’s blowing hard, bring the flag inside — a cross base on its own won’t hold a four-metre pole in a strong gust.
Hard ground, outdoors and long-term: the parasol base
Is your flag staying by your shopfront, showroom or company entrance for weeks or months? Then go for the parasol base. You fill it with water on site, which puts plenty of weight exactly where you need it.
Empty, it weighs next to nothing, so it’s easy to carry and you only fill it once it’s in place. A watering can or a few bottles of water will do. If frost is forecast, drain it in good time.

What a base can’t fix
Beach flags are made for winds up to about Beaufort force 6. That’s a strong breeze, not a storm. Beyond that point it’s no longer about the base but about the pole: it bends or breaks. So bring the flag in when it really starts to blow. It takes thirty seconds and saves you a new pole.
Two practical tips that often make a difference: don’t put the flag right next to the corner of a building, because the wind speeds up considerably there. And never leave a beach flag on a cross base unattended in a car park — a four-metre pole falling over does more damage than the flag costs.
Which shape and size go with it?
For all four shapes, the choice between cross base, ground spike and parasol base is yours:
- Beachflag Straight — five sizes (40 × 235 cm to 90 × 430 cm), from €85.00. The classic straight shape.
- Beachflag Square — 75 × 200, 75 × 300 or 75 × 400 cm, from €89.00. A clean rectangular flag, no band option.
- Beachflag Drop — 70 × 180 or 100 × 260 cm, from €105.00.
- Beachflag Wave — 70 × 210, 76 × 315 or 80 × 422 cm, from €120.00.
On the Straight, the Drop and the Wave you also choose a white or black band. The fabric is 115 g/m² UV-resistant polyester. Production takes 3 to 4 working days, followed by 1 to 2 working days of shipping within the Netherlands and Belgium, or 2 to 4 to other EU countries; allow 5 to 7 working days in total. Because every beach flag costs more than €60.00, shipping is free — to every EU country.
The bottom line
Can you push something into the ground? Ground spike. If not, and it’s only up for a short while? Cross base. If not, and it’s staying up for a long time? Parasol base.
