Meaning of the Portuguese flag

Green and red, with the Portuguese arms on a golden armillary sphere where the colours meet: an old navigation instrument recalling the great voyages of discovery. Green stands for hope, red for courage and the blood of those who fought for the country.

The flag has been in use since 1911, shortly after the republic was proclaimed.
